I wasn’t sure when I would be able to write our month four post but here I am! Finally, we have been to start up our renovations again after a 4 month break and it is hugely exciting! I hope you enjoy reading this post as much as I enjoyed watching our build start up again.
If you are here for the first time, hi! You may like to read these posts first:
What are we building?
We are having an oak framed wrap around extension built! The Old House is listed so this hasn’t been a straight forward build. Firstly, it took over a year to get planning and secondly, the cost skyrocketed when we found all sorts of issues that had to be sorted. We decided to wait during the colder, wetter months so that we could get the oak frame and roof on during the lighter and dryer months. This meant starting again after Christmas.
Progress -week 1 and 2
The first day the builders were back, I came home from work and I was faced with this when I opened the back door! We couldn’t get out and Dottie dog had to crawl underneath to get to the garden. It was like a pet assault course! There is no access to the back of our house from the front yet so the poor dog had to work out how to get to her toilet! The cat tried to get in the house but gave up! She is not quite so bright as Dottie! It was only for a few days so it was fine.
Once the concrete floors were laid, it was really clear how large the rooms were going to be! The room on the right will be a utility and “the other room which we are not sure what it will be,” with the garage behind it. The L shaped room is our new kitchen and dining room. The original house has to stay as it is and that includes all the windows. This has made us really think carefully about how to use the space in the kitchen. The rest of the area is our new patio which looks huge in this photo but I think it will be perfect.
Progress -week 2 and 3
Once the concrete was set (and yes, the cat did walk over it!) the walls started to go up quickly. It was cold, with frosty days, so our lovely builders worked really hard in tricky conditions. Sorry some of the photos are dark. I work full time as a teacher so sometimes don’t get home in the day light.
Progress -Week 3 and 4.
Typically, the cold weather dipped below freezing and the builders couldn’t do much visible work. They finished off the walls and chatted about getting in the contractors to measure up for the oak and the windows. Then this happened…..
Snow came to Wiltshire so the building work ground to a halt. Oh well! At least our renovations have started up again and I really pleased that we can see visible results now. I’m back on Pinterest and Instagram getting some ideas for the interiors which has become a nightly habit!
I’ll be back in a month and hopefully, we shall have even more progress! I suppose that is up to Mother Nature now. Thanks for stopping by!
